Overwater Bungalows to Kick Back In

For many years, travelers escaped to the South Pacific to stay in an overwater bungalow. But their popularity has grown over the last few decades, and today you can find them in tropical locations all over the globe. Here are five overwater bungalows to kick back in and relax.

Cayo Espanto is a private resort island off the coast of Belize. Although the four-acre island resort offers several different villas, their overwater bungalows, called casa ventanas, are the first of their kind in Belize. The custom overwater bungalows each have one bedroom and are located at the end of a 150-foot dock, providing ample privacy for couples. Each bungalow is about 1,100 square feet and boasts several thoughtful appointments and amenities including alfresco showers, Turkish bathrobes, luxury Egyptian cotton linens, and air conditioning.

Sandals' most recent Jamaican property, Sandals South Coast in Whitehouse, features an abundance of overwater bungalows to choose from. Each has a private patio with a double soaking tub, an over-the-water hammock, and an outdoor shower. What's better? The bungalows also have swim-up platforms, so guests can jump in and enjoy the Caribbean waters at their leisure. Guests will find spacious bathrooms, king beds, and glass floors that allow for observing the marine life below.

Gili Lankanfushi (Gili, for short) is a 20-minute boat ride from Male, the capital of the Maldives. It is a destination known for having some of the most fabulous overwater bungalows in the Indian Ocean. While it is home to the largest overwater bungalow in the world, most guests choose to stay in a Villa Suite. Each of these two-floor bungalows offers a king bed and at least two daybeds for those traveling with families, as well as semi-open-air bathrooms with large soaking tubs. There are also sundecks with loungers and catamaran nets for those who want to float. Guests can even enjoy a private rooftop terrace to take in the views.

Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico

Mexico's Playa del Carmen is a short ride from Cancun, and home to the Rosewood Mayakoba, a resort that only has one bungalow. That one bungalow is ideal for couples, however, as it offers true solitude. Guests can enjoy a private plunge pool, picturesque views of the mangroves and lagoon surrounding Mayakoba, and an exceptionally comfortable king bed. You'll be greeted with a bottle of mezcal and given fresh fruit and bottled water daily.

The nine overwater bungalows at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay stand on natural rock formations that jut out into the Niha Phu Bay, where the resort is located. The natural rock formations also serve as the foundation for private plunge pools and terraces. A population of endangered monkeys live in the hills behind the resort, so don't be surprised if you pass one while exploring the landscape.
