You may have heard that the Great Wall of China is the only human-made structure on Earth that can be seen from space, but the experts at NASA have confirmed that to be false. Not only is the wall generally not visible to the unaided eye (because it tends to blend into the surroundings of the same color), but there are also many other fascinating structures — both natural and human-made — that are visible from the satellites and space stations that orbit our planet. And thanks to the NASA Earth Observatory, we can get an idea of how they look to astronauts, including those at the International Space Station, which orbits 220 miles above Earth’s surface. From ancient religious monuments to colossal waterways and the world’s tallest mountains, check out these 15 landmarks that can be seen from space.
